Beverley AC - celebrating firsts and lasts!
September saw the Club celebrating a lot of
firsts as well as lasts! During the month, the
Club added to its “green” commitment when
members took part in the first Plogging! event in
conjunction with The Wombles of Beverley.
This initiative has been introduced as part of the
Club’s commitment to be a “greener” club and
saw 10 members meet near the racecourse and
spend a couple of hours picking up litter, followed
by a social jog around the Westwood.
Inspired by the seniors, the juniors did their own
pick near the parkrun start before the start of their
Sunday morning training session.
Huge congratulations to two of our members who
completed two personal firsts this month running
their first official marathon, the Grim up North,
Hornsea Marathon up and down the
old railway line.
Completing the Short (17 mile) route was Jackie
Edwards in 4:06:00, Ivor Roberts in 6:15:00, and
Mark Oglesby and Frank Harrison both finished
in 7:34:00. And not forgetting a special well done
and congratulations to Ivor for whom this was the
25 th time he has completed this iconic event!
Club member and Organiser, Lucy Stamford,
commented on the success of the event. “The
morning was deemed a great success with most
people turning up on foot or cycling which was
great to see, but to every person who turned up in
whatever mode of transport, thank you! And you
may be very surprised to see how much litter was
collected from the area around the racecourse.
By the time we got back from a jog around the
Westwood afterwards, all the litter had been taken
away by the council!”
Hollie Oxtoby and Chris Gibson completed
the event in 7:02:24. This followed their first
“unofficial” marathon, which they undertook as
training, the Hell On The Humber endurance race
across the Humber Bridge, where they completed
32 miles in 8:50:00.
And now a last! The 35th Smuggler’s Trod event
took place this month and may well be the final
running of this popular challenge along the
Yorkshire coast. Sam Allen was the first Beverley
runner to complete the Long (26 mile) route and
was also first lady to finish in a time of 4:46:00.
Lucy Stamford in 5:23:00.
Lots of half marathon successes to celebrate as
well! The iconic Great North Run Half Marathon
saw a great turn out from Beverley. First Beverley
runner to cross the finish line and in 42nd
place overall was James Johnson in 01:08:46,
followed by Steve Babb (01:20:22), Paul Clark
(01:35:05), Mark Lorch (01:39:39), Patrick Marshall
(01:43:05), Lucy Berriman (01:47:25), Ben
Atkinson (01:50:54), Jake Williams (2:00:44),
Carrie Watts (02:11:39), Jo Rowland (02:12:31), Carl
Hailstone (02:20:38), Mila Ramos (02:21:06), Linda
Wright (02:25:03), Usha Chapman (02:34:53), Cat
Williamson (02:47:29).
New members, whatever your age and fitness
level, are always welcome and further details

offer to its members can be found on the Club’s
